Celebrating the Winter Solstice Together!

Dec 22 , 2023

The Winter Solstice, with both natural and cultural connotations, is not only an important solar term among the 24 solar terms, but also a traditional Chinese folk festival, known as the "Winter Solstice is as big as the year". The Winter Solstice is the starting point of the sun's return. Since the Winter Solstice, the sun's height rises and the daylight increases day by day. The Winter Solstice marks the rebirth of the sun and the entry of a new cycle of its movement. Therefore, ancient people regarded the Winter Solstice as a "auspicious day". Among the eight festivals of the year, the importance of the Winter Solstice is no less than that of the Spring Festival. In southern China, there is a custom of ancestor worship and feasting during the winter solstice. In northern China, it is customary to eat dumplings on the winter solstice every year.

The Winter Solstice has always been highly valued by the people. During the pre Qin period, the customs and cultures of various regions in the north and south were diverse, and the customs of each region had not yet been integrated and popularized. Many festivals had a history but lacked records. Many ancient customs and activities are rarely recorded in literature.

According to existing works, the Zhou people (in the Shaanxi region) celebrated November as the first month of the year and November 1st as the beginning of the year. The first day of November in the winter of the Zhou people coincides with the winter solstice date of the current "24 solar terms" in the same lunar calendar. Therefore, it is said that since the Zhou period, the Zhou people have had sacrificial activities on the winter solstice (November).

Yi said: The former king even closed down, and business travel was not possible.

The Book of Rites in the Later Han Dynasty states: "Before and after the winter solstice, gentlemen are at peace and quiet, and all officials are at ease." It is also necessary to select "capable individuals", play drums, instruments, and sheng, and play the "Yellow Bell's Law" to celebrate. During the Tang and Song dynasties, equal emphasis was placed on the winter solstice and the beginning of the year. "The Winter Solstice of November is the most important festival in the capital, even for the poor. Over the course of a year, they accumulate false loans, which make it easier to wear new clothes, prepare food, and worship their ancestors. Officials release customs and celebrate travel, just like traditional festivals."

"The winter solstice is as great as the year itself." (Qing Jialu). Jiaxing celebrates the winter solstice, as the saying goes, "The winter solstice is as big as the year", preserving the ancient style. According to the "Jiaxing Prefectural Annals" (Volume 34, Customs), "On the winter solstice, the festival is celebrated with a ceremonial canopy, resembling the New Year's Day ceremony.". The people advocate winter solstice for tonifying.
